Swaziland has made significant progress over the last decade in battling the HIV epidemic. With the scale up of antiretroviral therapy (ART) and prevention programmes, such as those to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV. The country’s HIV prevalence has also remained relatively high, with 19% among population 2 years and older and 26% among 15-49 years’ age group, (SDHS, 2006/07) though a decline has been noted in the incidence.

The report presents major achievements of the SRH Program in summaries that are useful to policymakers, program managers, health service providers and other stakeholders. The level of analysis in the report is primarily descriptive and is particularly useful for assessing progress of the program activities, against national targets as set out in National Health Sector Strategic Plan (NHSSP), Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) strategy. The program is one of the key players in MDG 4 which is to reduce infant mortality from 79 to 24.

The Swaziland SRH strategy seeks to address elen strategic focus areas in order to attain the National SRH Goal which is to "guide establishment of an evidence-based framework for the implementation of a well-coordinated and integrated sexual and reproductive health and rights programme in order to attain the highest level of health and well-being for all people of Swaziland."

The Government of Swaziland has given high priority to the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) and according to the latest data, significant progress has been made in delivering PMTCT services in Swaziland. In 2010, Swaziland committed to the elimination of new infections in children and keeping their mothers alive through comprehensive scale up of PMTCT.

The High maternal mortality rate, high adolescent fertility rate, unmet need for family planning, and on-going problems with sexual and gender based violence are some of the indicators that highlight a need for comprehensive sexuality education and evidence based interventions. This SRH Policy provides concrete areas of focus and is aligned to internationl and national policies and frameworks.
