Swaziland has a generalized epidemic in which 26% of the population aged 15-49 is living with HIV. Infection is widely distributed but peaks and lows within specific segments of the population. Generally, females experience higher levels of infection, accounting for nearly 60% among adults. Between ages 10-14, HIV prevalence in girls is almost twice that of their male cohorts. This disparity more than triples within the 20-24 age group although prevalence does not peak in females until 25-30 years old.
